FANTATORNEI MUSICALI - Jazz 1960s

Quello di Hancock per me è un grande album, ma forse si era capito dal mio voto

Io non l'ho mai ascoltato.
Di hancock metà sessanta ho ascoltato Maiden Voyage, bellissimo, e anche il successivo.
Komeda lo sento nominare adesso per la prima volta.
Gary Burton ho ascoltato poco o niente, la prima volta che ho letto il suo nome è nella sua bellissima recensione che c'è nella copertina del primo lp di Pat Metheny.

Negli anni Sessanta Hancock come leader o co-leader ne ha fatti nove: sei con la Blue Note; uno con Atlantic che vira verso il jazz-funk ed un altro atipico che ho scoperto solo pochi anni fa. In quest'ultimo caso è co-leader con parte del gruppo di Speak Like a Child alle prese con la musica sacra ebraica.
Mi ero dimenticato la colonna sonora di Blow Up.

E' proprio Speak like a child l'altro che ho ascoltato.
Maiden Voyage ho ancora il cd, l'altro forse ce l'avevo in cassetta registrato.
Ma 30 anni fa.

Mi pare in entrambi c'è Ron Carter al basso che ho visto dal vivo 5-6 anni fa ormai 80enne credo.
Stesso genere di formazione, un quartetto, e stessa genere di jazz dei tempi con Hancock, jazz modale.

Va precisata una cosa a cui, credo, ogni appassionato di questa musica tiene molto: il jazz è una musica molto democratica, per cui un album accreditato a x, quasi sempre contiene spazi solistici importanti a y, z ecc... Per cui se io metto Davis, Coltrane, allo stesso tempo valorizzo Shorter, Tyner, Hancock ecc...
Il processo è tanto più evidente, se si prende in esame il catalogo di Blue Note, dove i posti di leader e sideman si scambiano con molta facilità. Addirittura ci sono sedute di registrazione a poche settimane di distanza con formazioni molto simili tra loro che hanno dato luogo ad album accreditati a musicisti diversi. Peraltro Blue Note è stata una delle poche case discografiche a pagare correttamente i musicisti. Soprassiedo su Columbia, su come è stato trattato Monk per esempio...

Sebbene non l'abbia votato, la lista era corposa... Quell'album è unanimente considerato fra i più belli del pianista neroamericano. Ho sempre adorato come usa la sinistra, in maniera tremendamente evocatrice della matrice africana del jazz trasfusa nei Caraibi. Ho avuto il piacere e l'onore di vederlo nel '94 a Genova con un gruppo fantastico composto da cinque ottoni (due trombe, un trombone, un trombone basso e un corno) e la classica ritmica guidata da lui al piano.

Sì, concordo.

C'è la versione vocale di Original Faubus Fables di Mingus che la Columbia aveva rifiutato. In effetti, leggendo il testo si capisce subito perché... Da menzionare il titolo della quarta traccia che rivela l'estro ironico del contrabbassista di Nogales: All The Things You Could Be By Now If Sigmund Freud's Wife Was Your Mother.
Scorrendo la lista, troviamo Shorter in tre album diversi e non è che il suo ruolo nei due album non solisti (Jazz Messengers e Lee Morgan) sia minore. Poi c'è il trio fantasmagorico di Evans con La Faro e Motian. La Faro morirà dieci giorni dopo in un tragico incidente stradale. Altro lavoro di pregio è l'album orchestrale di Don Ellis, amante della musica folclorica balcanica e delle metriche complesse nonché Dexter Gordon al suo picco o comunque molto vicino ad esso.
Ci penserò un po' sopra.
